Why do people wear fezzes

Fez hats are made of felt or kilim fabric yet it has two types which are either in the shape of a truncated cone made of red felt or a short cylinder made of kilim fabric but usually Fez hats have a tassel that is attached to the top part but both types are being used since the hats are being introduced.

Fez hats are introduced by the Balkans during the Byzantine reign and during the Ottoman period were Slavs, Bosniaks, and Serbs starting to wear Fez as their headwear. Since it has been introduced a lot of other people and tribes started to make their own version of fez hats too. The women would wear a red fez instead of a headscarf and the men would wear a black or red cap.

Men would wear their Fez with a material that is similar to a wrapped turban around the base but on Fez became famous as a reading cap with a fur or the proper Greek dress. Through the years the material used for fez has been continuously changing and a lot of styles has been made too. Fez hat is one of the first symbols of the Ottoman modernity and over time it has become as the part of the cultural identity. In the west, it is seen as exotic and romantic and in the United States and the United Kingdom it became as one of the famous parts of luxury men outfit.

It is a round metal plate or skull-cap that hung a curtain of mail to protect the upper shoulder and neck of the one who wears it. Muslim restaurants and hotels all over the world have their staff wear fez hats too.

In Sri Lanka, it is used by local Muslims. Ben Davis April 24, Can anyone wear a fez? What does a green fez mean? Why was the fez banned? Who wears a red fez? What celebrity wore a fez? Do Freemasons wear fez? How much does a Shriners fez cost? Why does Aladdin wear a fez? What religion are the Shriners? What is the difference between a Tarboosh and Fez?

Who wears a fez hat on TV? What is the tassel on a fez for? Is it legal to wear a fez in Turkey? Can Christians wear fez? What are the red hats in Turkey? The origins of the fez, called the tarboosh by the Moroccans, are in dispute. Some claim that its origins are from ancient Greece; others claim it comes from the Balkans.

The wide acceptance of the fez stems from the Ottoman Empire extending its influence never to Morocco however in the early 19th Century. They insisted that their subjects modernize dress and encouraged the fez in lieu of the turban. With the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after WWI, another move towards modernization - this time looking west - actually made the fez illegal in Hats having this kind of power and meaning is a recurring theme in history.

Men who wore fezzes were imprisoned. When monarchies were overthrown in Iraq, Egypt, and Libya, the fez was condemned by the new regimes.
