Why plywood




















It swells and stretches with humidity. Often, it bows, cups or twists due to internal stresses that are hard to predict or prevent. And knots definitely are not without their challenges. Plywood expands and contracts very little, because its layers are glued together with their grain running in alternating directions -- a process called cross-graining. This also helps prevent warping and other bad habits of wood.

Knots typically aren't a problem because plywood face veneers on at least one side of the panel don't have any.

You can run into knots in the interior plies, but these tend to be small and usually don't affect your finish. All of this means that plywood is exceptionally user-friendly. After over four decades of skateboard production and countless advances in building materials, decks are still made with good ol' plywood for four primary reasons: it's lightweight, it's moldable, it's strong and it's elastic.

Would a single piece of solid wood be big enough to allow you to make furniture? Of course not. Standard plywood sheets, on the other hand, come in large sizes, with lengths of at least mm and widths generally at mm. You can certainly do a lot with engineered wood products of that size. Since plywood comes in larger sizes, it follows that plywood has it over solid wood when it comes to square foot coverage. One standard plywood sheet alone would be big enough to make sure to cover an area of a certain size.

There will be no gaps or uneven ends, and wastage will be very minimal. One of the great disadvantages of working with solid wood is its tendency to split along the grain, especially when you try to drive a nail or screw through it.

But the similarities are minimum. The material is of superior quality and is waterproof to a great extent. Thus, its applications are found mainly in boat building and industries where exposure to water is high.

Ply means layer. The thickness of the sheet is determined by the ply. More ply creates a thicker and stronger board. The minimum number of plies are 3ply and can go up to 5 or more. Buying these wood veneer sheets is comparatively easy. Moreover, they are pre-cut to reduce waste. The most popular and common dimensions are 4 x 8 ft. Another popular option is 5 x 5 ft.

In addition, there are special plywood types like aircraft plywood. Thanks to such diversity the usage for plywood is wide. The thin veneer layers that are put into a mould provide the wanted shape and soft edges. This enables to make designs better and more interesting. The soft edges are valued greatly for children's furniture since it makes the products safer for children to use.
