What should a floor tom sound like

I'm not sure if your floor tom is suspended on a stand or on legs, but at 16X16 I'm gonna guess legs. I was having an issue with a dead floor tom. I own a few kits and for a gig I did, I accidentally grabbed the wrong legs. The previous owner of those particular legs had put the little Pearl Floor Tom Leg Air Suspension Tips on those legs that "allegedly" allow the drum to resonate better.

It was fat and there was some sustain. What a differenece!!! I've added those to all my floor tom legs. It was like buying three new floor toms! I've also seen RIMS mounts for floor toms. They go all the way around and the legs attach to that rim. I put the Pearl air suspension feet on both my floor toms. Didn't change my life or anything, but they work as advertised No kiddin'? I've never heard of those. My floor tom just has 3 legs with little solid hard rubber feet on them.

Sweeet thanks. I will order some with my drum bags soon. Can't seem to get my floor tom to sound good :. Let's try this. First if the tom doesn't sound good, sustain is the least of your problems. Loosen the reso head all of the way until it is finger tight. Then turn each lug one full turn. See how it sounds. That should be plenty tight. Now do the same thing with the batter head. If these two heads are proper this should be tight enough to have a good tone.

Too high? Once tuned the sustain should take care of itself. Learn to do this by ear, and leave the Tune-Bot on the store shelves. All of the lugs may need tweaking but overall this should get you where you need to be. You had another thread with the same problem with a 12 inch tom. I would suggest checking out Youtube for some drum tuning videos.

If a tom rings excessively then you can add a spot of moon gel or slacken off a lug slightly to kill the overtone. I have moon gel in my bag but have yet to use it. Morrisman Platinum Member. I have a 14 floor that rings for 5 seconds.

A birch drum with sharp edges. Moongel does nothing, because my ringing is the fundamental tone, not the overtones. Even three moongels made no difference to the five seconds.

I've found two fixes: 1. An external felt damper which clips on to the rim and just touches the head. I have a Pearl round one, and it works on the top or bottom head. Easily adjustable. New posts. How do I make my floor tom sound like this? Thread starter Cacaphony Start date Aug 24, Cacaphony Member. Set the heads. The way to begin is to set the heads of the floor tom. It is quite important that you do this process when handling toms in comparison to other drums. Take out the new head of the drum which you plan to replace it with. Refit the hoops and tighten all rods as much as possible. Press firmly in the middle with your fingers.

About 3 fingers should be okay when pressing the top of a floor tom. Make sure that you look out for wrinkles and smoother them before tightening the head. Wrinkles can be a big problem for drums especially floor toms. Workaround each part of the drum slowly to ensure that you cover all wrinkles. A criss-cross method may not be the most effective option for you.

Make sure that you continue till you have successfully removed wrinkles. Stretch the head of the drum firmly by pressing your finger against it firmly a few times. Adjust the rods one final time to take care of any final issues. Tension in half-turns.
